HRCA Helps Fight The Extreme Cold

Since the cold season has started the Hungarian Reformed Church Aid (HRCA) launched its annual firewood program to support the needy families who are not able to heat their homes properly. With the help of the National Food Chain Safety Office (NÉBIH) 100 needy families are already receiving firewood, but there’s still need for further help in other parts of the country. The project has also been supported by the Evangelical Church in Rhineland in the past years.

‘We receive many letters asking for help after the holidays. This is why we shouldn’t forget about disadvantaged people even in the first few months of the year. The HRCA has been organizing the firewood project for years to help the needy in the coldest months. We believe that with the help of our supporters we will be able to provide warmth to many homes,’ said Balázs Lutár, Deputy Director of HRCA and Head of the Social Development and Donation Coordination.

He added that it is especially important to look after older people living around us in the cold weather. Not only people who live on the streets are in danger, but also those who are not able to heat their houses and whose home is cold. It can indicate a problem if there’s no smoke coming out of the chimney or if elderly neigbours don't show up in the usual times of the day. The statistics show that over 8,000 people have died in the country as a result of freezing temperatures since 1990 and almost 50 percent of them lived in unheated homes.
